emily speaks

My friend Lori had this to say on Dickinson, which I found very inspiring:

"Emily Dickinson for me is the living proof (well, yeah, not really living anymore) that exceptional writing doesn't have to come from exceptional experiences, from a life of action, of challenges. Writing comes from somewhere else. Somewhere inside. Writers open their eyes and all their senses and perceive a reality that is different from what others can see."

I know it's almost heretical to say so, but Emily Dickinson has never done a lot for me. I always found her a little self indulgent.

By all means, great writing doesn't have to come from amazing experiences -- but for me nothing Dickinson wrote holds a candle to the kind of emotion that Thoreau's writings on Ktaadn evoke.

Of course, they were completely different people with totally different styles and to compare them would be like comparing chalk and a pair of glass dungarees.

So I'll leave it there.

Lori's quote is really inspiring... it's how I feel about photography...

Have a great weekend.

Oh, I wrote something that's worth being quoted! It does good to my poor ailing self-esteem. Thank you.

But that video is spoooooky! Don't you think? I could only watch it for a few seconds and stopped for fear that it would give me nightmares. Why does it look so very disturbing for me? No idea. It gave me palpitations and such. I'm staying away from it.
